But surely candles are no longer fashionable or useful ? To a degree  the use of candles is perhaps seen as a return to the kind of natural lighting used by our ancestors, a relaxing antidote to the pressures  of modern life, where the use of artificial lighting, in particular street lighting, has contributed to environmental pollution.

However, for all their new found popularity candles do not have  a functional role. They tend to be used these days as something attractive to decorate the home , as in the case of scented candles and other home fragrance items, or for their symbolic value. Sometimes, for example in religious ceremonies, they denote spirituality and mysticism, and sometimes celebrations. All acrossthe world, for instance, we all celebrate birthdays and other significant   days by blowing out candles on a cake. Candles can imbue you with a feeling of deep relaxation and tranquility, and can also give rise to moments of quiet and refection. Equally, the soft glow and flickering flame of your favourite scented candle can help create a romantic ambiance So don't leave your candles at the back of the cupboard - take them out, light them and enjoy their attractive  relaxing flame !
